From the HR Digest to Forbes to the American Society of Employers, people are discussing the importance of skills over degrees. Minneapolis Employment and Training (MET) saw this trend coming.
Two years ago, MET and our metro area partners launched Minnesota’s Skills-based Hiring Accelerator workshops. Staff from Goodwill Easter Seals of Minnesota facilitate these workshops on skills-based hiring. They help employers improve how they hire and develop talent. Workshops are held in different locations around the metro area. Employers learn practical tips on writing better job descriptions and assessing skills. They also explore ways to build stronger and more diverse teams.
Employers are moving in this direction. But it's hard for job seekers to understand and adapt to the changing trends in hiring practices. They rely on their job counselors to guide them, so, we recently added workshops to address this. These workshops are for the job counselors. They help job counselors learn how to help their job seekers. In these workshops, attendees learn how to:
- Coach job seekers to highlight their skills
- Teach job seekers to tell their own stories
- Understand how the adoption of AI has impacted the hiring process
Moving forward, skills-based hiring will become a more important part of the hiring process. MET is helping both our job seekers and employers embrace this change.
