Cream City Rising Event: A Model of Workforce Synergy and Transformation

As a workforce development innovator and motivator, I’ve had the honor of attending hundreds—if not thousands—of workforce development events over the years. And yet, I’m still regularly in awe of the tireless work of workforce development boards, state agencies, contractors, and community partners across the country who are committed to helping low-income individuals gain and sustain meaningful employment.

My connection to this work is deeply personal. I am the son of a mother who was able to change the trajectory of our lives because of a strong workforce development program in Syracuse, New York. I’ve seen firsthand the generational transformation that can happen when a job seeker takes ownership of their work and life experience. That’s why I believe in this work so strongly—and why what I recently experienced in Milwaukee left me profoundly inspired.

Earlier this year, my friend Eric Shepherd invited me to attend the “MUS 2025 Summer Convening: Forward Milwaukee – Cream City Rising,” hosted by Midwest Urban Strategies (MUS). I had no idea what to expect, but what I witnessed exceeded all my expectations. With over two decades of professional experience in workforce development, I can confidently say this convening represented one of the most potent examples of best practices I’ve ever seen.

The event showcased something rare: true synergy. Workforce leaders from across the country gathered with local board members and community organizations, and rather than competition or ego, I saw collaboration and unity. The leaders of Milwaukee have found a way to come together, align their efforts, and focus on the greater good of their community. From employment initiatives to housing, apprenticeships to nonprofit partnerships, excellence was evident in every corner.

One shining example was ThriveOn King, an innovative project we had the opportunity to tour. According to the event guide:

“The ThriveOn Collaboration—formed by the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Medical College of Wisconsin, and Royal Capital—is revitalizing Milwaukee’s Historic King Drive district. At its center is the transformation of the former Gimbels-Schuster’s Department Store into ThriveOn King, a space shaped by community input and designed to expand access to health, education, and economic opportunity, reflecting a shared commitment to long-term investment in neighborhoods and the people who call them home.”

One project inside this space was particularly moving—a fully operational restaurant run by participants in Milwaukee’s TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) programs. From financial management to food prep, every aspect of the restaurant was handled by program participants. The food was delicious, the service top-tier, and the environment spotless. More importantly, it was a powerful symbol of ownership, skill-building, and career readiness in action. ThriveOn King also houses several other community-empowering businesses and services, making it a true hub of opportunity.

Another highlight was meeting Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson, who impressed me not only with his presence but also with his genuine engagement. Unlike many politicians who make appearances, Mayor Johnson was fully present. We had a meaningful conversation that made it clear—he’s all in. His commitment to MUS and the people of Milwaukee is both real and rare.

As someone whose role is to inspire others, this event resonated deeply within me. I eagerly attend events to give, speak, and motivate—this time, I left feeling filled up, encouraged, and profoundly hopeful. The work happening in Milwaukee, guided by Midwest Urban Strategies, is a shining example of what’s possible when mission takes precedence over ego and collaboration takes center stage.

I walked away not only inspired but also energized to share this story. If your organization is seeking real-world examples of partnership and best practices, look no further than the work being done through this collaboration. I look forward to attending another MUS event and witnessing the continued growth and innovation taking place throughout the Midwest and beyond.
