Midwest Urban Strategies recently welcomed workforce professionals from across the country for an engaging Learning Lab featuring FutureWork Systems, where participants explored how workforce data can become a powerful tool for improving program performance and participant outcomes.
Led by Lydia Sullivan, Director of Client Relations, and Geoff Smith, Partner and Director of Marketing, the session challenged attendees to think beyond required federal performance reporting and consider how operational data can answer the equally important question: "Why did these outcomes happen?"
The presenters demonstrated how combining federal performance measures with operational data provides a more complete picture of workforce program effectiveness. Participants explored strategies for understanding who is being served, how individuals engage with services, where participants succeed or struggle during training, and how workforce programs contribute to long-term economic mobility. The discussion also highlighted the value of identifying patterns across workforce centers, training providers, industries, and geographic regions to inform continuous improvement.
One of the session's most memorable concepts compared workforce data to a GPS. Federal performance measures represent the destination, while operational data provides the navigation, helping organizations understand whether they are on the right path before they reach the final outcome.
Throughout the Learning Lab, attendees were encouraged to think critically about the questions their own data should be answering. Rather than viewing data solely as a reporting requirement, participants discussed how meaningful analysis can improve decision-making, strengthen participant experiences, and ultimately create better workforce outcomes.
The session concluded with a powerful reminder: Every measure has a purpose. By understanding the participant’s journey, not just the final destination; workforce organizations can make smarter decisions, strengthen programs, and better serve their communities.
