Midwest Urban Strategies (MUS) is more than a consortium; we are a movement. We are a force of critical thoughts, ideas, and actions that come together to support the workforce. As a network of urban workforce boards and strategic partners, we champion innovation, creativity, and collaboration across the Midwest. Together, we work to connect job seekers with opportunity, employers with talent, and communities with hope. But for our impact to resonate, we must do more than the work; we must tell our story.
Why Our Story Matters
Storytelling is more than a communication tool; it’s a catalyst for change. By articulating who we are, what we do, and why it matters, we can:
· Inspire investment from funders, partners, and stakeholders who see the power of our vision. Now more than ever, we must diversify funding.
· Influence policy through compelling, data-driven narratives that elevate workforce issues. It is critical to shine light on our work so that policymakers can see the benefits of the public workforce system.
· Build trust in our communities by highlighting the real lives changed through our work. We stive to be a part of the communities we serve, not just building in the community.
· Strengthen our collective identity as a unified force for regional workforce transformation. We are better together.
How We Tell It
A strong story doesn’t tell itself. It takes intention, coordination, and commitment. Here's how MUS is working to elevate our voice:
1. Clarify Our Value
We define what sets MUS apart, our commitment to gathering, collaboration, innovation, creativity, and measurable outcomes. This is our foundation.
2. Collect Success Stories
We create a simple, consistent way for member boards to share stories highlighting individuals, employers, and programs that embody our mission and vision. Send your stories to us regularly so we can share them on social media, include them in the newsletter, and elevate them for the purposes of advocating for our workforce system.
3. Leverage Data
With tools like Lightcast and Future Works BI, we connect personal stories to broader labor market trends, bringing both heart and credibility to our impact. Share your data with us so we can combine our strengths.
4. Share Internally & Externally
From member newsletters to social media and regional convenings, we build a storytelling ecosystem that keeps our network and the public informed, inspired, and engaged. Make sure to visit each other's websites and LinkedIn profiles to elevate one another.
5. Build Capacity
We’re training and empowering members to become confident storytellers. Because a strong collective voice begins with strong individual voices. Attend, participate and co-host learning labs that build our stories.
The Bottom Line
Telling our story is not an add-on, it’s a strategic imperative. It’s how we build momentum, attract partners, influence change, and ultimately, serve our communities more effectively. Our work is transformative, and the world needs to hear about it.
Let’s make our story heard—clearly, consistently, and boldly.
