Together as a partner of Midwest Urban Strategies, The City of Minneapolis Employment & Training is finding ways to implement workforce development strategies that address the hiring demands of IT employers in the Midwest Region.
In response to a rapid growth in tech jobs in the Minneapolis Saint Paul region, the City of Minneapolis along with three high-quality accelerated learning programs: PRIME Digital Academy, Creating IT Futures – IT Ready, and The Software Guild came together with 60 regional employers to train and place diverse workers in to tech careers.
Midwest Urban Strategies is excited to celebrate this success and learn how to leverage it across our region and with other urban workforce boards.
Since 2015, the City of Minneapolis Employment & Training has achieved the following through its TechHire program:
- 977 graduates of accelerated programs
- 748 graduates are in full-time positions with salaries averaging $48,000
- 28 percent people of color
- 32 percent women
- 430 or more engaged employers that range across industry sectors including C.H. Robinson, the City of Minneapolis, Wells Fargo, Target, the Nerdery, G5 Solutions, Allina Health, and Analysts.
The innovative work of this collaborative continues to grow with more than 369 employers engaged to date offering internships and employment opportunities for TechHire students and graduates.
Through the DOL TechHire Partnership, MUS partner organizations (Employ Milwaukee, St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE) and the Southwest Ohio Regional Workforce Investment Board (SWORWIB) also received one of the 39 grants awarded by the Department of Labor. This investment will increase the number of underrepresented individuals gaining the skills and competencies necessary to gain and retain employment in technology occupations.
